There have been so many blog posts that have blown up in my mind and popped like a soap bubble, yet this one amongst a few more are ones I had committed to myself to write and absolutely must not skip come rain or sunshine.
Okay so this is me. As a baby.
Look at that hair. Nothing like my straight-ish tresses now but naturally I had curls. They’ve turned into fun waves as I grew up and I try to keep them as long as I possibly can manage but yeah. You get the idea. This is my real hair.
Last year as Sass starting growing her hair out I first saw waves
that then very swiftly turned into gorgeous ringlets!
I now had only one goal in life.
To preserve these curls.
Well. There are other goals too. An entire Truckload but yeah. For focus’ sake. One goal. Here. Pay attention.
I had been talking to a great friend of mine who is on the Admin Moderator panel on this group Curl Talk Pakistan which is where I actually started reading up on what’s to be done.
Here goes.
First off you ditch the shampoo.
Yes. You read right.
Use a neutral pH shampoo (which is usually most baby shampoos) for a final wash and then bid it farewell.
There are a ton of Curly Hair friendly safe conditioners but plenty that aren’t. So be careful what you buy.
We use Suave Naturals Aloe Vera or Strawberry conditioners. (Will cover in a whole different post, what exactly do you look for on that list of ingredients)
Apply it well to the hair and Scrunch to Condish (Scrunch the hair in a pool of water in your hands or a bowl/ mug while the conditioner is still in the hair) for at least 10-15 minutes.
Rub the scalp vigorously so the gunk on the scalp dislodges and then wash it away with the conditioner that’s now murky.
Wrap hair in an old t shirt and don’t use the routine towels. Wrap it around the hair in turban and keep it that way for 10-20 minutes.
In case of a toddler this time will cut down considerably but just do it for as long as you possibly can manage.
Then coil and air dry.
If you’re using a Curly Girl safe styler: moisture product, you put it in your wet hair before you wrap them in the T shirt.
This is literally the simplest shortcut explanation of how you wash curly hair for maximum moisture.
- Once every few weeks rinse in Apple Cider Vinegar solution. Don’t use the chemical ones. Use the one with mother in it.
-
once or twice a week do a deep treatment. We haven’t done one yet but I’m thinking of doing one with Olive oil and Almond oil. Add a mashed banana to yours too. Sassi is banana intolerant (to eat) so I’m just scared of exposing her to it in any form.
-
switch to silk pillow cases. I cannot stress this enough. So important otherwise you will regain all that frizziness that you so lovingly worked OUT of your hair.
Her day one of her first ever Curly Girl treatment were these gorgeous locks.
And then she slept on cotton bedsheets and pillowcases.
We woke up with frizz.
Will get my hands on silk ones ASAP and resume the treatment.
MOISTURE is QUEEN!
